Hazard
Awareness
and Hazard Remediation
Associated with
Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)
|
|
Tactics which we now classify
as the use of Weapons of Mass Destruction have been used for thousands
of years. In the 6th century B.C., the Assyrians poisoned wells
with Rye Root. In the 15th Century an Englishman, Sir Jeffery
Amhirst, knowingly gave smallpox laden blankets to Indians who
were loyal to the French. In World War I, the Germans inoculated
horses with glanders and went on to use chemical warfare against
British and American troops in the form of mustard gas. As of
1995, Iraq possessed several armed warheads containing various
biological agents including Anthrax, Botulinum Toxin and Aflatoxin.
In light of the
terrorist attacks of September 11th and the subsequent mailing
of Anthrax laden letters from the mail facility in Trenton, New
Jersey, META has developed a course exploring the issues concerning
the remeditiation of hazards associated with the use of Weapons
of Mass Destruction.
Designed for
those who already hold a recognized certificate in Hazardous Waste
Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER), Asbestos Worker,
or Asbestos Supervisor, this fascinating course looks at terrorist
attacks in terms of hazardous materials emergencies.
Students will
learn how to characterize the size and extent of an event in terms
of resource availability and prioritization of needs. They will
explore the particular contaminant characteristics of different
types of WMD events (nuclear, biological, and chemical). Students
will examine the origins of terrorism and terrorist organizations
and learn to identify potential targets as well as how to organize
the response based on this information. This course also covers
personal protective equipment based on the characteristics of
particular WMD hazards.

Past participants say it
best...
I needed this class to help to synthesize all the information
available concerning these hazards. With its very open presentation
style, this class fulfilled my training needs. The knowledge base
of both instructors and students was a class strength.
-Charles E. Easly, Environmental Consultant
My need for
and overview of WMD- especially the cleanup and waste management
of biologicals was met. This class was effective. I liked the
willingness of the instructors to take and and all questions.
The strength of this class was the respect shown to us and desire
to respond to our respective needs.
-Don Nelson, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
My goal was
to obtain information on monitoring equipment, PPE, decon procedures.
The information provided was excellent. Both instructors were
very knowledgeable, excellent resources. Good real-life scenarios
were presented
-April Pilarski, West Central Environmental Consultants
My goal was
to find out about the hazards of terrorism and whether or not
there is a potential for my company to participate in the clean
up. I'm much better informed about the chemical and biological
hazards that could occur in the case of a terrorist attack. The
strengths of this class were the discussions and the knowledge
and involvement that Dr. Keller has in the field.
-Anonymous, Environmental Services

Directors
Dr. Ralph Keller
Dr. Keller received his doctorate in Chemical Engineering and
a Specialty in Environmental Sciences in 1977 from the University
of Missouri at Columbia. He worked with Midwest Research Institute
for three years and then with Mobay Chemical Corporation for five
years. In July of 1984 Dr. Keller became a consultant in industrial
hygiene, environmental pollution sampling and control, and hazardous
material control and management. He is now president of RMK Consultants.
Dr. Keller has provided consultant services to both commercial
and industrial clients. He has developed a manual for OSHA, "Hazardous
Operations Health & Safety Training" and provided instruction
to over 1400 individuals over the past eight years.

Brad Mayhew
Brad Mayhew offers many years of experience in Environmental Engineering
and Consulting. His experience includes environmental and energy
auditing project management specification development, cost estimating,
industrial hygiene and laboratory. This experience is supported
by graduate-level training (University of Kansas) in small particle
dynamics, air pollution device design, solid waste management,
environmental policy and regulation, laboratory analysis, project
management and real estate investment analysis.
As president and Founder of META, Incorporated, Mr. Mayhew maintains
technical oversight of all projects. His personal involvement
and extensive professional background ensures adherence to the
